NHS X-ray plan for pets with cancer
A hospital has been criticised for suggesting that it could raise funds by using its radiotherapy department to treat cats and dogs.
The proposal was one of 700 put forward by staff members at Ipswich Hospital, which has debts of more than £24 million.
Treating pets with cancer on Saturday mornings would bring in about £50,000 per year, the hospital said.
Unison, the largest union representing NHS staff, said that hospitals should stick to treating sick human beings.
“There must be other places where people are waiting for treatment, or treatment could be speeded up,” a spokeswoman said. “That would be a better use of the facilities.”
