Things To Remember When Teaching Dog Jump
Teach your dog to jump obstacles of various shapes and sizes. Keep the dog on leash until she knows how to jump. Keep the jumps simple during the first few lessons.
During the “Hup! Heel!” exercise, leap the hurdles with your dog to give her confidence.
Give the jumping command BEFORE you use the leash to pull the dog across.
Move the leash over the jump AHEAD of the dog. Give praise while the dog is jumping.
Never permit your dog to balk at a hurdle. If she does, pull her slowly across.
If your dog tries to duck under the bar, cuff her nose with the back of your hand to make her draw back, then coax her to jump by patting the top of the bar.
If she fears the bar, place the pole on the floor or the ground and WALK the dog back and forth several times, until she is no longer afraid.
During the “Hup! Heel!” exercise, after your dog jumps each hurdle, call out a loud “Heel!” and snap backward on the leash, then pat your side and keep your dog at heel position.
When practicing the RECALL OVER THE THREE JUMPS, kneel when you call your dog, stress the jumping command as your dog approaches each hurdle, and give praise while she is jumping.
